Davor Šuker - Interview

President of the Croatian Football Federation about relations with the Football Association of Serbia, match Serbia - Croatia of 6th September, future of football in the region, clubs scene...

Visit of the Croatian FF delegation to Belgrade and meetings with management of the FA of Serbia was also an opportunity for our official site interview with Davor Šuker, President of the Croatian Football Federation.

-It's always nice with friends - those are the first impressions of the famous player and head of the Croatian FF. - Of course, we talked about our forthcoming match. I know that all involved will do their utmost for the atmosphere at the pitch to be hot, on the stands like hell, and that supporters will cheer their teams. And the better should win and celebrate after the victory. We can't allow anyone to play with our fortune. Full stadiums are the point of football. No one will get hurt because of chants and whistling, but we should stop those who'd make a gesture and therefore like to get a bit of popularity that can damage all of us.

Šuker pointed out cooperation between FA of Serbia and Croatian FF...

-We have to be together and cooperate. To repair infrastructure, to get modern stadiums. Why some of us wouldn't get a new stadium and four matches at the EURO 2020? UEFA and FIFA make us repair stadiums conditions.

Result is the most important thing in football, emphasised Šuker...

-We all live on results. Our main goal is to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil. Result will also be important at the match in Belgrade. We scored in time at the match in Zagreb, but the Serbian team could also return in the match, in the second half, if only they used some of the chances. In such important matches decisive thing can be who scores first and who enters the match in a better way. I can hardly wait for the match to begin. I expect a great battle, a good game and to be honest, let the better team wins and those who crave to triumph more.

Croatian delegation and President Šuker were impressed by the Sports Centre of our FA in Stara Pazova.

-Amazing story, really. This is how it should be done for one's Association, for one's country. Wherever I can I'll promote what I have seen in Stara Pazova. You set the standard high, and we will build a similar camp in Zagreb, but probably without a hotel...

sukerMorning visit to the Crvena zvezda (Red Star) stadium and entering the main pitch awoke emotions, admits Šuker...

-I scored here, in the shirts of Osijek, Dinamo, but also Yugoslav National Team, I remember well, I scored against Faroe Islands. Believe you me, I was proud at that time for also being a members of the journalists' selection and therefore could play here, at Marakana.

Davor Šuker was a member of the "Chile boys" generation, world champions in 1987, in the U-20 category. He knows now that Serbia recently got a generation of European Champions and that they'll bear nickname "Lithuanian boys", after winning the Championship in that country.

-Winning of that Championship is very important for the boys. It's good it wasn't that thing well known for our region - made it to the end, but lost. No, they won. I watched the finals against France. I congratulated to the FA of Serbia from the bottom of my heart. I was also very happy to see Drulović in role of the head-coach. I noticed cheekiness in those boys, and that is very important. And now I have no doubts that the FA of Serbia will know to bring them to the big scene in a few years and to enter the greatest competitions with them.

And a few final words for current club issues...

-Dinamo is economically independent and they figured out in time what was necessary for success in modern football. There's no instant success, but only planned, long-time work. Partizan is doing something similar...Hajduk and Crvena zvezda are a bit behind in that sense... I believe Zvezda will make it right. I talked to Džajić, I saw he had a vision. You can enter Champions League only if the whole system, all services in the club, breathe as one -said, among else, Davor Šuker.
